The Taraba State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist and recovered an illegal firearm in Jalingo, in what it describes as another operational success in its ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Usman A. Usman, a student of the Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau Institute for Quranic Memorization, Jalingo, and a native of Sansani in Gassol Local Government Area, was allegedly found in possession of a mini revolver pistol without ammunition.

Police say the suspect intended to use the firearm to intimidate fellow students following a misunderstanding.

The suspect was arrested by operatives attached to the GRA Division, while the firearm was recovered and taken into police custody.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Taraba State Command, ASP Victor Mshelizah, the incident occurred on July 14, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m., after the management of the Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau Institute for Quranic Memorization reported a dispute between two students to the GRA Division.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that he obtained the revolver pistol from another student of the institution, identified as Akilu Alhassan, who is currently at large.

The Police Command says a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspect and other individuals believed to be connected to the case.

Commissioner of Police, Taraba State Command, CP Morkwap Sebastian Dongshal, psc (+), has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.

The investigation is expected to determine how the firearm was obtained, establish whether a wider criminal network is involved, and ensure that all those connected to the case are brought to justice.

The Commissioner reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to tackling cultism, illegal possession of firearms, and other violent crimes across the state.

He also urged parents, guardians, school authorities, and community leaders to remain vigilant and support the Police by reporting suspicious persons and activities capable of threatening public peace and security.

The Taraba State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
