Dauda, described by neighbours as a calm and hardworking Almajiri student, was under the care of Mallam Dauda Yankara before the incident that led to his death.
The controversy reportedly began after a young man identified as one Abba was accused of stealing eight bags of soya beans.
Community sources said the suspect was apprehended by residents and allegedly confessed to the theft before implicating Dauda, claiming the teenager had seen him on the day he planned the crime.
Residents alleged that the suspect had earlier threatened the boy, warning that he would either harm him or drag him into trouble if he revealed anything about the theft.
Despite repeatedly maintaining his innocence, Dauda was reportedly taken into custody by police officers in Yankara for interrogation.
Sources within the community said elders and guardians had already initiated efforts to peacefully resolve the matter with the owner of the stolen goods before the situation escalated .
Speaking on behalf of the deceased’s guardian, Yankara said the teenager never returned home alive.
“We tried to settle the matter within the community even after Bishir insisted he was innocent,” he said emotionally.
“Suddenly, the police came and took him away. Later, we heard he had died after being tortured in custody and that his body was deposited at the hospital,” he added.
He also called on human rights organisations and relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death and ensure justice is served.
“I want justice for Bishir. He was only about 15 years old and was killed over something he did not commit,” he lamented.
Community members described the late Dauda as a disciplined Islamic student known for his humility, good character, and peaceful lifestyle prior to his arrest.
When contacted, however, the spokesperson of the Katsina State Police Command, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the Command had already commenced an investigation to determine the true circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
He assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly probed.
