Court Sentences Female Arms Supplier To Death for Aiding Banditry In Katsina

A Federal High Court in Katsina State has sentenced a female arms courier to death by hanging after finding her guilty of terrorism-related offences.

The conviction comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies and government authorities to curb the proliferation of arms and weaken support networks sustaining criminal activities across the North-West region.

It also followed a successful prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges bordering on conspiracy to commit terrorism as well as aiding and abetting terrorist activities.

According to security sources, the convict, Hauwa’u Mukhtar, was arrested by operatives of the DSS on September 16, 2023, at Jibia Motor Park in Katsina State while allegedly attempting to transport 438 rounds of 7.62 millimetre ammunition to a notorious bandit leader identified as Ado, who operates within the Dunburum Forest axis of Zamfara State.

The DSS subsequently filed a two-count charge against the suspect before High Court Number Three in Katsina under Suit Number KTH/65C/2023.

During the trial, the prosecution presented witnesses, documentary evidence and exhibits linking the defendant to the offences.

After reviewing the evidence and listening to arguments from both the prosecution and defence counsel, the presiding judge, Justice A. B. Bawale, held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court found Mukhtar guilty on both counts and sentenced her to death by hanging in accordance with the provisions of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State, 2021.

Security sources described the judgment as a landmark victory in the fight against terrorism and banditry, stating that it demonstrates the ability of security agencies not only to intercept criminal networks but also to secure successful convictions through due legal process.
