Suspect Detained After Molotov Cocktail Attack On OpenAI CEO’s Home

A suspect was arrested after a Molotov cocktail attack targeted the San Francisco home of Sam Altman, escalating security concerns around the artificial intelligence company and its leadership.

In a statement, the San Francisco Police Department said the incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. when a 20-year-old man “threw an incendiary destructive device” at Altman’s residence, “causing a fire to one exterior gate” before fleeing on foot.

Authorities said the same suspect later moved toward OpenAI’s offices, where he was “threatening to burn down the building,” prompting a swift police response.

Police confirmed the individual was taken into custody, adding that “charges are still pending at this time,” while investigations into the incident continued.

OpenAI confirmed the attack, stating that “no one was hurt,” and expressed appreciation for the rapid response by law enforcement.

“We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation,” a company spokesperson said.

The attack marked the latest in a series of security incidents involving the company’s facilities. In November, OpenAI’s headquarters was placed on lockdown after a man “threatened to go to several OpenAI offices in San Francisco to ‘murder people,’” according to reports.

Protests had also been staged outside the company’s Mission Bay offices earlier in the year, reflecting growing scrutiny of the AI firm.

In a personal blog post following the attack, Altman shared a photo of his husband and baby, writing that he hoped it might “dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me.”

He also referenced “an incendiary article about me a few days ago,” appearing to allude to a recent profile that questioned his leadership.

“Now I am awake in the middle of the night and pissed, and thinking that I have underestimated the power of words and narratives. This seems like as good of a time as any to address a few things,” Altman wrote.

Reflecting on his role in the fast-evolving AI industry, he added: “I am a flawed person in the center of an exceptionally complex situation, trying to get a little better each year, always working for the mission.”
